At Sea Against the Soviet Fleet is a historyof the evolution of the United States Navy's Operational Intelligence culture that informs great power competition with China today. At Sea Against the Soviet Fleet examines the critical transformation of naval intelligence during a pivotal era marked by the Cold War and the Vietnam conflict. Bryan Leese meticulously details how U.S. Navy operational intelligence evolved to meet the complexities of modern naval warfare, particularly in response to the increasing threats posed by the Soviet Navy. Structured into four main parts, this book begins by examining the Vietnam War and the institutionalization of shipboard operational intelligence, or what Navy intelligence calls Opintel. The book highlights the establishment of Integrated Operational Intelligence Centers as part of the RA-5C Vigilante program and the innovative strategies that emerged in air combat and targeting. Leese goes on to underscore the necessity of Opintel to the U.S. Navys close and distant blockade strategy in the 1960s and 1970s. He delves into the decentralization of intelligence processes, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and the need to prevent surprise attacks. This evolution is framed within the transition to the Navys Ocean Surveillance Information System, a decentralized and responsive operational intelligence system. The ongoing developments of shipboard intelligence capabilities are explored, demonstrating how these advancements empowered naval commanders. In the 1970s, the organizations evolved as the revolutionary Opintel adaptations of the 1960s that leveraged cooperation without hierarchy became formalized. Leese highlights the revolution to evolution process by introducing Opintel support to shipboard tactical decisions to integrate operational intelligence into comprehensive naval strategies. Capturing the essence of this transformative period, the author discusses the cultural dynamics within the Navy that fostered innovation and interdepartmental collaboration. These developments not only contributed to maintaining a strategic edge over the Soviet Union, but also laid the groundwork for future naval operations in the digital age. Leeses work reveals the intricate interplay between technology, strategy, and personnel in creating an effective intelligence framework that allows the U.S. Navy to assert influence at sea, setting conditions for sea control in conflict. By blending rich archival research with firsthand accounts, this book offers a nuanced understanding of how the Navy adapted to an ever-changing operational landscape, ultimately preserving peace while navigating the complexities of high-stakes maritime conflict. This work will argue that the operational intelligence (OpIntel) culture in the U.S. Navy now was codified in the Cold War. The work will also make the case that this existing OpIntel culture is rooted in aircraft carrier culture, a culture which accepts adaptation and favors a structure that has the principles of mission command built in. Additionally, I see this work as having two purposes: 1) making the case that the USN's OpIntel strengths now in an age of Great Power competition are the same as those which guided the USN during the Cold War, and 2) Making the case for the success of USN OpIntel (or viewed another cynical way, that because we are in an era of Great Power competition, that the old methods of OpIntel at sea work, so why change them?) One other argument outside the central argument is that USN OpIntel owes its success to carrier culture specifically, so there is an aviation culture angle here. One other point the author raises in his proposal is that this evolution of OpIntel at sea in the face of the Soviet threat fostered a culture of trust between USN commanding officers and their intel officers.

Autorid: Bryan H. Young Bond meets Alex Rider and Cherub in this brilliantly written, fast-paced spy action thriller. All credibly delivered from somebody who knows all about counter-intelligence... Several deaths have occurred amongst members of staff in the Goldfinch Institute, a research facility in Albuquerque, USA, which manufactures highly classified weapon systems for the British Army, the Secret Intelligence Service and SIS-TERR. Bex's job is to go to Albuquerque and covertly investigate to see if there is any threat to British interests, but there's a problem - the Head of Security of the Goldfinch Institute is someone she was at university with. Bex is forced to call on Kieron's help again, as he goes out undercover in her place with a faked identity as a teenage computer genius. As Bex investigates the deaths of the Goldfinch employees, there seems to be something more sinister lurking behind them. Something that not only threatens Kieron, who's been kidnapped by the Goldfinch Institute and taken to its HQ in Tel Aviv, but the whole of Eastern Europe... High-octane action and fast-paced adventure - guaranteed.

Autorid: Andrew Lane
As the ghetto's streets run with blood, can Jan Kalisz find the truth?January 1943. Warsaw is a city of the dead. In the ghetto, the last fifty thousand Jews await their fate but, unlike those who preceded them to the death camps, they are prepared to fight to the end. Jan Kalisz, Kripo investigator and Resistance double-agent, has promised to supply them with weapons. But how will he fulfil his vow? The murder of a German officer appears to provide an opportunity. For the victim is a man with multiple identities, one of which is a wealthy Jew The hunt for the murderer draws Kalisz into the chaos of the ghetto, only to find a new, perilous mission awaiting him. SS death squads are not the only enemy the Jews fear. A mysterious figure known only as the Golem stalks the ruined streets, spiriting away orphaned children. Can Kalisz track him down before he strikes again? The chilling second thriller in the Warsaw Quartet by Douglas Jackson, perfect for readers of Simon Scarrow and Robert Harris. Praise for Blood Sacrifice 'One has the impression that all the novels Jackson has previously written, especially the nine that make up his Hero of Rome series, have prepared him for what he has set himself to do in this series. This is a story of shifting loyalties, of crime and detection, but also a study in historical tragedy. Jan Kalisz has to carry a lot of weight as the hero of such a story. So far, however, he is fully up to it and the promise of what is to come is compelling. Meanwhile, one can confidently say that these first two novels display an intelligence and ambition rare in Scottish fiction today' Scotsman Praise for Blood Roses, book one of the Warsaw Quartet'A compelling, evocative story of evil stalking amidst the chaos of war' Giles Kristian 'A dark, twisting thriller Jan Kalisz, Douglas Jackson's police officer hero, is the natural heir to the late Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther' Andrew Taylor 'A remarkable crime debut What raises the novel to another level is in the atmospheric evocation of a city in the process of being systematically obliterated by the Germans and brought to life again by Jackson's pen Gripping stuff, a series that could develop into something impressive and a goldmine for Philip Kerr Bernie Gunther fans' Maxim Jakubowski, Crime Time 'This is historical crime fiction at its best' Chris Lloyd 'The writing is scalpel-sharp, the unrelenting savagery of the Nazi occupation vividly painted With this book, Jackson will rightfully be regarded as one of the UK's finest crime writers' Ben Kane 'A taut, tense thriller Gutsy and gripping, this is perfect for fans of Chris Lloyd and Robert Harris' D. V. Bishop 'Jackson has created a brilliant mash-up of WW2 thriller and a serial killer chiller, and in so doing brings a fresh perspective to both. Sharp, intelligent writing that makes for a compelling read' Alison Belsham 'Jackson brings the tension, brutality and paranoia of Warsaw of the period into murderous life. A knife-edge thriller' Douglas Skelton 'Jackson has written an utterly compelling novel A remarkable piece of work, a fine piece of craftsmanship' Scotsman

Autorid: Douglas Jackson
MORNING, AFTERNOON, NIGHT. THE MOTHERS ARE ALWAYS WATCHING . . . 'Brilliant . . . Chidgey's luxurious and unhurried prose stokes tension in a compulsive thriller' Observer 'Written with insight and brio, deftly balancing darkness and light, depth and pace' Guardian 'Grand and devastating, and packed with perfectly timed revelations . . .This involving, humane novel brims with vitality - and soul' New York Times 'Chidgey writes with surgical precision and emotional weight . . . quietly devastating, fiercely intelligent and unforgettable' Irish Times 'Eloquent prose, rich characterizations, and knotty concepts - an emotional and intellectual tour de force' Kirkus 'Brilliant . . . you will race through this book in a single, breathless sitting' Literary Review England, 1979. Vincent, Lawrence and William are the last remaining residents of a secluded New Forest home, part of the government's Sycamore Scheme. Every day, the triplets do their chores, play their games and take their medicine, under the watchful eyes of three mothers: Mother Morning, Mother Afternoon and Mother Night. Their nightmares are recorded in The Book of Dreams. Their lessons are taken from The Book of Knowledge. And their sins are reported in The Book of Guilt. All the boys want is to be sent to the Big House in Margate, where they imagine a life of sun, sea and fairground rides. But, as the government looks to shut down the Sycamore Homes, the triplets begin to question everything they have been told. Gradually surrendering its dark secrets, The Book of Guilt is a profoundly unnerving exploration of belonging in a world where some lives are valued less than others. 'What a book! Tense, inventive, mysterious and moving, The Book of Guilt poses big questions in the context of a rocketing plot. I loved it completely' Karen Joy Fowler, author of Booth 'Original, dark, clever and compelling' Mary Ann Sieghart, author of The Authority Gap 'This is a compelling and terrifying novel whose alternative history engages chillingly with current possibilities. No one writes children better than Chidgey. She exactly gets their experimental cruelty and related innocence as they attempt to piece their world together' Elizabeth Cook, author of Lux

Autorid: Catherine Chidgey
